I got to visit 2 of the biggest rainforests in the world and learn about how they got there. My family is very happy that I'm finally home but they wish that I would of stayed on my trip a little bit longer because they think that there is so much more for me to see.
What did you learn on your trip around the world?
How does your family feel to have you home?

COMMON COLD WEEKLY
NOVEMBER 22, 2002

COLD SEASON IS #2 FOR PUTTING PEOPLE IN BED
BY: LINDSAY WHITNEY

NEWPORT- Once again cold season is coming around and is putting nearly 100,000 people in bed each year. We talked with one of Eastern Maine Medical Center's Doctors, Dr. Greene. We asked Dr. Greene what causes the common cold? In her response she said that “ the common cold virus is caused by having contact with a person who already has a cold, such as: shaking hands, kissing, sharing drinks or sharing eating utensils.” Dr. Greene also said “ if you have children to disinfect their toys or anywhere that they can reach that could possibly hold bacteria and to make sure there isn't any colds going around at their daycare center.” Dr. Greene showed us a diagram of how the common cold starts. She said “the common cold starts when the virus attaches itself to a receptor on the surface of nasal cells in your nose, then once the virus is in the cell it starts infection which leads to a cold.” We also asked anonymous people about there experience with the common cold. One anonymous person said “I hate having a cold and when I do have one I often miss work or miss out on something”. Another anonymous person had said that they know when their coming down with a cold when they start getting a runny nose and sore throat. Dr. Greene was telling us that Eastern Maine has a policy against colds. She said “where so many people are at the hospital they can't risk having the common cold virus going around. We also have thousands of instant hand sanitizer machines around the hospital. My boss also makes us sanitize our hands for any germs after we eat or after we get done dealing with a patient. We also have to wash our hands before we go see a patient.” After talking to Dr. Greene we have learned that they have to be very careful with germs around the hospital. Some hospitals won't even let people or employees with colds enter their hospital because they can't risk having so many germs going around with so many sick people in the hospital. After talking to Dr. Greene they gave us a tour around Eastern Maine Medical Center. As we were going around we did see that they have a lot of sinks and instant hand sanitizer stations. I've learned a lot from all of this and I hope you did too! But always remember to wash your hands!

Compare

My life compared to Isabella's life are way different. Isabella and I both live in a two-story home but my house is way bigger than Isabella's and I have more rooms than she does. We both have a sister but she also has a baby sister. We both go to school everyday and we both also help our mothers. Isabella's mother doesn't work and my mom works everyday except for Sunday. Our government is ten times bigger than Isabella's was. We both have one best friend. We've had several big events but ours are way worse than Isabella's was. One different thing that I have in my life that Isabella didn't was that I have electricity, T.V's, cellphones, computers and motorized cars. Everything Isabella had was powered by oil or the sun. There type of entertainment was sitting around the fire playing board games or telling stories. Now that I've compared my life to Isabella's I've found out that my life is way easier compared to hers.

Event

The big event that occurred during my time period was when the peasants went on strike. My family and friends were there when this happened. This all happened at the market in my town a couple weeks ago. The peasants felt that they weren't getting enough credit for what they do and that they weren't being treated fairly so they went on strike. My parents went to town to see what was going on while I stayed home with my sisters. Later that day my parents came home and said that the peasants had torn the market apart because they felt that they weren't being treated fairly. That next morning on my way to school I went down to the market to check it out, it turned out to look way more horrible than I thought. Others were more devastated, some had lost there shops on the market and others couldn't get what they needed from the market since they had to shut it down while they repaired it. In the end the peasants did get a little more respect but they never really changed anything completely.

Culture

In my community I interact with my best friend Anne and my family. Anne and I tell each other everything and were always together when we can be. Since my family can afford more things than other people we usually eat some type of meat and vegetable every night. Most of the time we have beef or pork and for desert we usually have cake or cookies. We drink milk with most of our food since the water isn't that clean. In the morning for breakfast my mother usually makes us oatmeal or eggs. The town that we live in isn't that big. Most of the people that live in my town are quite wealthy and can afford things that I can afford. We have a market in our town that sells all kinds of goods and everybody has a nice house.

Government

My government was Feudalism. When I was growing up one law that I disagreed with was that Women weren't aloud to wear their hair down. Women always had to wear there hair pulled back into a ponytail or a bun to keep it out of our faces. One law that I did agree with was that children could quit school at 15 years old to help with their family's at home. My parent want me to get a good education so I didn't quit when I turned 15 I kept on going. My family and I are Christian. We go to church every Sunday and pray before we go to bed and every meal that we have each day. One conflict that we did have was that the peasants' children couldn't go to school after they turned 12 years old. They fought against that and eventually they won there rights and now peasants' children have the same choice that I have with my education.

Personal Information

Hi my name is Isabella Baker and I'm sixteen years old. I live in the country of Italy with my Father, Mother, 10-year old sister Kate and my baby sister Mary. We live in a two-story, brick house on Baker Lane. My house has a kitchen, living room, dining room, 1 bathroom and 3 bedrooms. I go to school in the morning until 12:00 in the afternoon then I go home and bake with my mother till 5:00. Then I help my mother cook supper before my father gets home from work. My mother stays home with my baby sister all day and my father is a carpenter who works from 6:00 in the morning till 6:00 at night on houses around our town. My little sister, Kate, goes to school from 7:30am to 3:00 in the afternoon then she comes home and watches the baby while my mother and I bake and cook supper. Usually my family and I play board
games after supper. Sometimes on the weekends my parents let me go stay with my best friend, Anne, or they let her come stay with us. But sometimes I can't go to Anne's house and I have to stay home and watch baby Mary. And every once and a while when I get home from school I have to clean with my mother instead of baking with her. Watching baby Mary and cleaning is how I get to do things and sometimes I get money for it. I usually spend my money on candy that I buy at market.

Memior

It was Sunday morning and I got a text message. It was
Paula. She was telling me about her night before with Sam. She said
that they kissed. I didn't want to talk to her because I was still
mad that she chose him over me Saturday night. But like a good friend
I talked to her about it. She seemed excited about it but I didn't
say what my thoughts were. I was a little worried about what was
going to happen the next day at school and about what rumor was going
to be going around.

Paula was very popular and pretty. All of the guys
liked her, even older guys. She had a lot of freedom and her parents
let her go wherever she wanted to go and gave her whatever she
wanted. I loved to hang out with her, but for some reason, at times,
I felt that she was using me. Like I was only there for her when she
needed someone to hang out with. Paula had blonde hair, blue eyes and
pail skin just like me. She also had a lot of self confidence. Like,
if someone didn't like her she wouldn't have a problem going up to
them to tell them off. The one thing I didn't like about Paula was
that she liked to play the dumb game a lot. She was always acting
dumb and using the blonde excuse.

Paula
influenced me to not be myself. She taught me that it was good to do
bad in school, swear and to be just an all-around mean girl. I loved
the attention I got from hanging out with her. Everybody knew who I
was when I hung out with Paula, even people that I didn't know. Every
minute that I hung out with Paula I changed more and more. After
about a month hanging out with Paula, I started to play the dumb
game, and I could tell people were starting to get annoyed by me. I
noticed people that I was really good friends with didn't even care
to talk to me anymore. They just seemed like they didn't care for me
anymore. The worst part was that the close friends that I had before
Paula were starting to pull away from me and didn't talk to me
anymore.

I wanted to pull away from
Paula a little bit, but it was so hard! We had the most fun times
together! Everyday we would text each other in the morning asking
each other what we were going to wear to school that day, so we could
show up looking the same. We always hung out at each other's house on
the weekends and went shopping on like every weekend. Another fun
thing we did together was that during basketball season we both made
A-team our sixth grade year. Every practice Paula and I would fill
the water bottles up together and would be partners for foul shots.
Both of us usually made around 5 to10 foul shots each. She shot hers
differently. She would click her heels when she would go to shoot the
ball. Filling up water bottles was fun with her too because we would
always get wet from filling them up too much. Our teacher would let
us out before the bell rang at the end of the day, so we could change
early. We would get there before the other girls got there so we
wouldn't have to wait. I had a lot of fun times with Paula during
practice!

After a while I started to
see the real side of Paula. I was still friends with her when she had
her first “real” boyfriend, Sam. One day she asked me if
I wanted to come to her house for the weekend and I said that I would
ask my parents that night. I went home and asked my mom “Mom,
can I go to Paula's this weekend?” My mom said “Umm I
don't care.” So I went to school the to tell her my mom said I
could go and she said that she already had plans to hangout with Sam.
I was so mad! I thought to myself a real best friend wouldn't blow
you off to hangout with a boy, after she made plans with me.

When we came back to school
that following week she had told me that her and Sam kissed. I really
didn't care. I was still upset with her, but I still talked to her.
Towards the middle of the year I started to get annoyed by Paula. She
would always say that she was better than me just because she had
already kissed a boy. Paula already had a bad reputation and kissing
Sam made it even worse. Once Paula had a bad reputation, I had a bad
reputation just because I hung out with her. It was hurtful having
nobody like me and I didn't like my life anymore.

Finally I brought Paula's
name up in the car on my way to school one morning. My mom said “
Lindsay, you have changed and I just think you need to pull away from
Paula a little bit.” I just sat there and didn't say anything.
I kind of felt mad that my mom would say that to me and sad because I
let all of this happen. Then she said “ I'm not saying you guys
can't be friends, but you need to just pull away for a while.”
She also said that Paula had a bad influence on me and that I needed
to pull away. She said that I was doing bad in school, sports and
that I was constantly fighting. When I thought about it, I did
change and I wasn't myself anymore. So I finished off the school
year and that summer Paula and I did not really talk at all. Paula
sent me a few text messages but that was it. The only time we did
hangout over the summer was at summer camps. Other than that I didn't
hangout with Paula at all. Some of my friends told me that she was
mad at me because I didn't hangout with her all summer but I didn't
care.

Now I'm in seventh grade and
I haven't hung out with Paula at all this year. We're still friends,
but not like we used to be. Sometimes I get annoyed by her and her
dumb side. And i've noticed one thing about Paula by not hanging out
with her. She always makes people feel bad about themselves to make
her feel good. People who never talked to me are talking to me now.
Paula still has a bad reputation and her and Sam broke up a few
months before summer vacation. I'm so happy that my mom talked to me
about it otherwise I wouldn't be myself again and Paula and I would
still be hanging out..
